To avert my eyes
To avoid the posts
To run from the incessant vicarious trauma
Caused by Ahmaud finally stumbling.
There was blood on his shirt.
Just out for a light jog.
In a country where you can’t run from evil
Or stupidity
Or inhumane nature
Close your eyes
Don’t watch the news
Delete that app
Break your phone
Turn off your WiFi
Kneel if you must
Hold a friend accountable
Remember him with a smile
With the wind at his back
Instead of a gun in his face
Nor slumped in the street
Due to another racist instance
Run from the trauma
I tried…and I failed.
